According to Alan Birchenall, it's a load of rubbish, and that the survey has probably been carried out from people in Nottingham or Derby, but apparently Leicester is the 3rd unhappiest place to live in the UK.

Ok, generally speaking yes, tables are rubbish and a bit of a waste of time. So let's look at some of the issues that might make Leicester a candidate for being labelled "3rd unhappiest place". Birchenall's right in that sports can help, but that's not the be all and end all. Musically, most new ands that we see coming through are from Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Nottingham, London, not Leicester. For some reason, Leicester's music scene has never quite rivaled some of the bigger cities, and it's not just down to scale. Places like Edinburgh, Nottingham, York etc have a lot of historical buildings so those into their bit of "culture" have those right on hand. Theatre wise, The Curve is excellent, but personally, don't think it's in the right part of town. On top of that Leicester used to be one of the wealthiest cities in Europe, and over the years it's had it's clothing / manufacturing heart ripped out. Economically, worldwide, things aren't great. People have lost faith in politicians and banks.

If you really want to get a sense of perspective, visit any other city abroad. Barcelona, Paris, Madrid, Milan, Rome, Stockholm, Ljubljana, you can really feel the difference.

Ignore the tables, but don't ignore the fact that right now, people in Leicester are facing hard times.

The only time I ever felt unhappy being in Leicester was when I lived in the West End. Probably the most scary place to have to be in, and not the nicest of places to have to be by yourself, I never felt safe. Aside from this, I wouldn't say that Leicester is an unhappy place to live, as there is a lot on offer. OK, so the music scene has died out, but with Nottingham, Birmingham, Derby on the doorstep, it's not like I'm a million miles away from it.

To be honest, I had a phase of hating Leicester but once I went to Uni it grew on me again. I quite like Leicester really, I think it's a nice size for a city and the centre has a good range of shops for me at least. There are some areas which are run down of course and dodgy, but living in Bristol now there's a huge difference in some areas of Bristol in that way which I don't think is quite so apparent in Leicester.

Bristol is on the coast though, so it has that going for it. Nottingham has music and castle etc, Leicester has......

Not a fan of the City at all, but love the County.

Ahh no I love Bristol, it's just definitely a lot more rough in certain areas than I'm used to ha. Someone got spat at on my bus today for example  Ha yeah I guess there's not really anything to go properly in Leicester as such in terms of having friends visit.

Oh I've seen that sort of thing going on in Leicester too. The bigger the city, generally, the bigger the problems.
