Something of an inane post, but I thought some may find it interesting.

I remember some time ago that I was chatting to Hunter about Leicester's music scene and we both agreed that it wasn't a particularly fruitful for aspiring musicians. Of course this was about three years ago and having spent that time away from the city things may have improved.

I've found it very interesting during my time at music college and on the pseudo-professional music circuit in London that I've met a ridiculous amount of players and composers from Leicestershire, far more than from other areas, that have done the same as me and moved to London.

Most people seem to sense that Leicester doesn't have enough in the way high of high level facilities or tuition to realistically support anything but hobby musicianship.

I would absolutely agree with you on that. There is, and has always been, come incredible musical talent from Leicester and Leicestershire, but oddly, getting people to see those bands at a local venue when they're starting out is pretty tough. Tuition I don't know about, self taught (and it shows!), but there are studios such as Quad who are brilliant.

In general, the music business has gotten tougher. When we interview bands, some of the stuff they say off record about their experiences with the music industry is just shocking.

Leicester people were always used to having one (just about) acceptable small venue and a number of dives that weren't worth playing. There was nothing in the midrange, and then Granby Halls, the Universities and De Montfort at the top. Any bands hoping to build a following here were hobbled by that from the start, as well as the local attitude of not supporting anyone you haven't already heard of.

Now there are a few decent little venues, but the few midrange ones are tough or impossible to book. Even if you do you'll struggle to get crowds. I can fully understand why few people bother locally.
