Experts warn of big gulf in school social networking policies, as staff use Twitter, chatrooms and emails to contact children

The problems are obvious. Child protection. But to be honest I think there are more likely risks that aren't actually being addressed. For example, if a teacher befriends their pupils on Facebook, there is a risk that the boundaries between work and personal life start to blur, and before you know it, that teacher might end up almost giving virtual lessons over the internet to a select few. Not really fair on the teacher or the pupils. Worse, what happens if there is a relationship break down, some pupils, (some not so nice ones) may use that to upset a member of staff.

Personal Facebook is personal. Period

For goodness sake. All my friends who are teachers were told from day one, dont add students on facebook/twitter/internet/anything. Its weird enough seeing teachers out and about on the street, let alone on the internet where you can see photos etc!

I think Leicestershire is pretty solid on this, but I kind of wrongly assume that everybody else is doing the same as us.

In my old school the RE teacher added students on FB all the time and a supply French teacher gave out his persona email address in case any of us wanted him to write our course work for us! As far I as I know no one took him up on the offer but honestly... CREEPY

Yup, blatantly said it in class one day. Our reaction was the same.

With that sort of behaviour I doubt they'll be a supply teacher for long.

After the hearing a social media expert said teachers should set up separate sites to be friends with pupils.

And that's where blurring the lines happens. I'm all for teachers being nice and funny and making lessons awesome and being there to talk to issues about, but being friends with them is going a bit too far. I've had a teacher at my old school, well teachers I should say, who encouraged us to think of then as they 'aunt' or 'uncle' if we wanted to talk to them about personal issues which just made having serious discussions with them seem to weird so I stayed away when I could have done with the help. It always back fires.
