Something I found on my laptop. This bit is set in the middle of a forest in a storm and there's there people, one injured, and it starts off part way through a phone call.

------

“Kathryn?” the voice was faint but there. It filled me with relief. As much as I hated Dad for his coldness he was always the one who soothed me when I was scared. Or like now, in danger.

“Dad!” I could hear the relief filling my voice even though I wanted to appear brave. “Arthur’s hurt his leg and can’t walk properly.”

“Where are you?” the voice was louder now. An effort on Dad’s part, not the storm abating.

“In this house in the forest. Nathan’s with us.”

“Stay there. Get Nathan to make a fire. I’ll come and get you when the storm has passed.”

“When the storm’s passed?! Dad! We need you now! Arthur’s hurt!”

A placating hand on my arm clamed me down. I turned to see Nathan’s brown eyes looking into mine.

“We’ll be fine, Kate.” He said using his old pet name for me.

“Alright.” I said to both Nathan and Dad. “We’ll stick together.”

“Good, I’ll be there soon.” He disconnected.

We all went off together to get see if there was any dry wood in the building. It was small on the inside. It smelled of damp and mould. Somewhere something dripped on the floor in a steady rhythm. The sound echoed. Nathan’s phone didn’t light up much space, every tentative half step forward unveiled only more empty space.

Then, as if from nowhere, a flickering light pricked the darkness. I stumbled back, crashing into Nathan who was holding Arthur upright. He managed to catch me before I fell.

The light moved into the room, followed by a hunched over figure.

“Hello?” an elderly, scratching voice called. “Hello?”

A face turned into the lamp light. The woman was a map of wrinkles, a stubby nose was squashed between two, beetle like eyes almost hidden by heavy brows. Yellowed, age worn teeth parted stretching papery thin lips over them in what was supposed to be a smile. The lantern light stretched just far enough to allow me to make out wispy gray hair, a knitted shawl and a stained, gnarled hand beckoning us towards her with a long, chipped nail.

“I really don’t like this, Nathan.” I murmured.

“We don’t have a choice.” He murmured back and gently nudged me forward.

I swallowed a lump of ice cold fear and took a slow step forwards. I felt rather than heard Nathan and Arthur following. The smile on the lady’s mouth stretched and up close I could see that she was wearing a golden crucifix around her neck. She backed out of the room into what looked like a hall in the dim light and led us into another room.

It was a small kitchen with an old red, ager cooker; wood panelling on all the walls and two arm chairs sat facing a small bird cage which was at present empty. A small fire was in the fire place giving out a golden glow. I began to wonder who lived in the middle of the forest with no central heating.

“I swear this house wasn’t here when we were kids.” Nathan murmured more to himself than to me but I agreed. Then again we hadn’t ever been allowed to venture this far into the forest when we were little.

Without invitation Arthur sat in one of the old arm chairs and put his foot on a low stool. The woman put the lantern down on a table and banged a saucepan onto the stove. We all flinched. Nathan looked around again and I, worriedly, noted that he was looking at all the exits. He saw me looking where he was looking. He stopped looking around and steered me into a chair.

“It’ll be fine.” he murmured in my ear.

Another pan banged on the stove. I flinched and stifled a scream. Nathan found another stool to sit on never turning his back on the old woman. I looked even closer at his face and saw that he was beginning to get anxious. He’d always been the strongest person I knew and had always been there for me when I was afraid. It was strange to see the beginnings of his fear and I knew him well enough to know that if I could see a little fear he was masking a lot more.

I looked away and tried to focus on something else.

“You managed to get yourselves caught in a real tempest.” She croaked. “Let me make you some hot chocolate to pass the time. Ah, it’s ready.”

She came back over to us holding a damp looking bandage. She shoved Nathan off the stool and moved it over to Arthur’s foot.

“What is it?” I asked surprised at how steady my voice was.

“A herbal remedy, nothing to worry yourself about.” She gruffly replied and pulled Arthur’s trainer off not caring that the force hurt his ankle even more than it already was. She put the bandage on and then forced the trainer over the top.

Arthur grimaced in pain and fisted his hands. The woman walked away.

“Bloody crazy old coot.” He muttered.

I have just finished reading a trilogy by a well respected fantasy author, and your writing is probably better then his.

"Is that the Wizard of Oz? The Wizard will sort it out. It's 'cause of the wonderful things he does."
