England is a country but England, Scotland and Wales were referred to collectively as Great Britain, with the inclusion of Northern Ireland changing this to the United Kingdom of Great Britain - UK for short. Great Britain isn't a country for the same reason Europe isn't :)

am, UK is not the same as Great Britain. Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales. United Kingdom is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

There's a bit from an old Number 10 web page about this topic, which is cited by Wikipedia (which says that both the United Kingdom and its constituents are countries, quoting the title of the page: countries within a country)

I think it's because the UK "states" were countries, where as the "states" in Germany were feudal principalities or some such, but interesting question. :-k

No they are not, They are towns and cities that are linked under the banner of Germany, whereas the UK was a set of countries that is linked under the banner of the United Kingdom similarly our land mass is called Great Britain but it is still 3 separate countries that are all part of the same land mass (unless I've got my names mixed up) I would guess it's all about how the places were formed before they were all grouped together.
