Great opportunity to win some awesome kit too. It would be great if a Jitty member won this, we have some great photographers :)

Also, my bad. Top prize is actually a Canon 600D camera, not money. I was trying to think what the heart of Leicester really was, so let's consider what the obvious pictures are:

- The Highcross, Good luck in trying to take photos in there as you are not allowed to do so without their permission. Also, shopping to me does not constitute either the heart of a city, or a hobby, but as a necessary evil.

- Leicester City Football Club, just no. Not because I'm a Forest fan, but simply on the basis that sport is incredibly divisive.

- Town Hall Square, seriously, how many photographs are there going to be of the City Council building, the fountain, and / or the lions.

- De Montfort University, again, just no. There are two more great universities in Leicestershire, so just using one would be grossly unfair.

- The clocktower, omg, you just know they're are going to be tonnes of photo's of that thing.

- Castle Park, it's lovely, but not many people go there.

- Cathedral, likely to upset some people because on religious / cultural grounds.

- "The Golden Mile", may actually cause the same sort of issues as taking pictures of the Cathedral.

I'd suggest that if Leicester does actually have a heart, it isn't a place.

What about The Market? Isn't it supposed to be one of the largest and most regular markets in Europe?

The new research centre is looking good so far. I hadn't actually connected it with the heart in Highcross even though I've stopped to read it before

Do you really need permission for The Highcross? I've taken loads of photos there before ^^;

The rule of thumb is that you don't have a legal right to take photos on private property, although many places may not be too concerned. If they do ask you to stop shooting then you should, but they can't ask to see or delete photos and they definitely can't detain you or confiscate equipment.

The market used to be Europe's largest permanent outdoor site but I'm not sure if it still is. It's rapidly turning into the world largest permanent junk shop though :)

Kuang may have had the same sort of thoughts as me. You see I was wondering about getting a candid shot of a street cleaner, or asking to take a shot of Police Officer or Fire Fighter. In other words the heart of Leicester I was thinking would actually be it's people who look after it.

Really nice photo, but does that really capture the heart of Leicester?

The cynic in me is wondering if that's secretly putting one over on the organisers by allowing the description to gloss over the more obvious suggestion contained in the photo.

Also, strong black vignettes - don't do it.

See, I do like the filters on it but there have been so many great raw images captured. Yes it shows new and old, but what I'm really seeing is a reminder of the old Leicester that got left behind and the new Leicester steering us away from our history.

That's kind of my inner cynic's point :)

I'm not very good with photos, but all I'm seeing is a run-down part of Leicester being mocked by the investors in Highcross. Surely they could have looked for a photo that didn't appear so narcissistic. Maybe I'm just interpreting it wrongly :-?

Nope, you're entirely entitled to your opinion, it's "art" afterall, and you're not the only one that has made similar comments.
